Meadow Rue

Devon, United Kingdom

I've bought three of these but am
stumped about planting. Having researched on the web, I have found seemingly conflicting planting insructions. They like damp but well-drained soil or even boggy soil, which surely is not well-drained? Damp and well-drained sounds like an oxymoron or am I missing something? I was thinking of putting them in a patch of soil that has developed moss which I think indicates that drainage is poor, so it's completely the wrong place.
Also, I'm confused about aspect.
Some say shade while another says half sun or full sun. Is half sun the same as part shade? Another site recommends roots in shade with flowers in sun. It's a bewildering range of advice and I need the help of GOY!

"Damp but well-drained" means not in a bog and not in soil that dries out either. If you can incorporate some organic matter into the soil with moss on, that should suit them well. They will also tolerate some sun, but I would not give them full sun, nor heavy shade. Hope this helps.

Thalictrum is a large family, different species come from different environments. Do you have the full latin name for it?

Thanks Andrewr, I knew someone could help. I'll do as you suggest. I'm so looking forward to seeing these in flower. They do not look hardy at all, having very juicy stems at the moment which look like they would cave in if a frost hit them, but fingers crossed.
Teadrinker, thankyou for answering. Thalictrum rochebrunianum is the name I was given.

The one you have should be pretty tough. It's only frosts catching the early growth you would need to worry about - throw something like garden fleece or a light blanket over it for the night if frost is forecast.
