I have to get rid of a tree that has died. It has a huge root and I may have to get it removed professionally as I want to replant straight away. The reason is that the tree hid an unsightly building. What would you recommend for immediate screening, about 8 to 10 feet high and 8 feet width, in clay soil.

you could get some long posts , cement them in and make your own trellis out of battaning that you can get from a builders . its rough sawn and used to put roof tiles on top of . its alo quite cheap.dont forget to get pressure treated posts or better still those metal spikes you bang in then bolt the posts in.i would get a wood stain preserve and stain the battaning before you make the trellis its easier.you can then just make it litteraly to size then buy a very quick climber or 2 .

It would cost you I think, but some companies now do "instant" kind of hedging so that you don't have to wait so long for more cover for this type of situation. Try googling hedge suppliers, or have a look on the Garden Centre section of GOY?
