When you say you have "tried to keep it out of direct sun", that sort of implies that you haven't succeeded too well. They do benefit from a lightly shaded position, so the flowers this year may well have been fried by the sun - the other possibility this year is cold nights, we had a particularly cold May, with frost quite often at night, this would cause this problem too.
