when should I prune a well established beech hedge also there is a very large sprawling Montana clematis hanging over it just coming into bud can I cut that back at the same time?

We do ours early autumn - September. If you do it after the clem's flowered do make sure there are no birds nesting in it.

Hi, welcome to GoY, I would leave it until the Clematis has flowered, then you can prune both plants at the same time, without losing the Clematis flowers, Derek.
