it can sucker though the one in our last garden never did.

It does sucker, but if you don't prune and just let it grow naturally, it tends not to.

Mine keeps going off too, but we have had thunder and then hail for the last 2hrs!

They are easily propagated by root cutting, so they tend to sucker after root disturbance. Not going to happen in the Rhus typhinus in the pic as it is surrounded by concrete.
Am a bigger fan of Rhus typhina 'Dissecta' (Laciniata) as it is that more graceful in presence.
