Is it ok to plant hostas round a small willow tree in a large pot in garden or will the hostas roots kill the tree?

Or do you have a willow tree in a pot and want to plant the hosts around it? I'd be cautious of doing this as the hosts will compete with the willow for water and nourishment.

Think you are correct , I agree with you too much competition

I would hope that it is a huge pot because both the willow and the hostas require a lot of space. It seems an unlikely combination to me, in a pot that is though it may be attractive in the ground.

Thanks, I was wondering if the hostas would take the water and nourishment from the tree and it seems from your advice it would.

Jahutchinson - I think you've slightly misunderstood the advice. It is more likely that the tree would take the nourishment from the hostas.
Depending on the size of pot and tree there are miniature/dwarf Hostas available, you might get away with those for a wee while.

Thanks Scottish, it's the willow tree I don't want to risk losing so I'm happy to take the risk.
I have lots of hostas in my garden that need dividing each year.
It was actually my husbands idea to have them in the same tub so was just seeking advice from more experienced gardeners as I wasn't sure.
I'm willing to give them a go.

Sorry Scottish I disagree… the Hostas will take nourishment that the willow needs in a pot!

But willows need a lot of water and so do hostas - not sure which would win there. I think something else less deep rooted would be better if they are all going in a tub. The willow will need to be in the ground eventually anyway unless its a miniature.

I think a willow in a pot is a daft idea… add hostas to that and you have a recipe for disaster!

I'm working from the experience of growing them both together in the ground. The ground around the Willow was far too dry to let the hostas thrive. It wasn't until I started over watering to compensate that they improved.

Ground is different to a pot Scottish… sorry!
