This shrub was growing in my frontyard, but I don't know what it is. It will get small white flowers that have a faint scent. Any guesses?

Hi, Wylie!
Euonymus flowers are green, and essentially scentless. I suspect a privet, maybe Ligustrum japonicum 'Variegatum'.

I would like it to be a privet, but it has no fruits after it flowers. The leaves are 2-3 inches long. But I can see how it could be a 'waxleaf' something.

Does it bloom on the tips of the stems, Wylie? Or on the sides?

I think on the tips, but I'm not really sure.

it may be easier to identify when it is in flower

Maybe variegated Gardenia:

though I would expect that to be more than slightly fragrant!

A real pity that isn't it. I'll ask again when it has flowers. Thanks.

Sorry Tug, but Euonymus don't only have green flowers - some have white too! Don't think they're scented though, never noticed.

I've got to admit, the only one I'm really familiar with is E. japonicus. I saw some E fortunei flowers a few years ago, and I thought it had green flowers, too, but how reliable is a memory that old!
Glynis has Wylie's bush's twin brother, and it's been ID'd as Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety', in question #24221. Further evidence of the fragility of recall.

Yea, I saw that one, and its definitely E. fortunei, and this one looks similar, but there's something about the roundness of the leaves that leaves me not completely convinced.

I agree. They are close but somehow different.

Well, you have a whole pack of us horticultural bloodhounds, Wylie. We'll run it down!

We need Fractal on the case... if anyone gets it, it'll be him.
