are conifer chippings harmful when put down under the conifers? I have 60ft trees, cut down to 25ft and the chippings have been spread across under the conifer trees, will this cause damage? smell? dangerous for the children etc? Please advise, thank you.

Not dangerous, no, though I wouldn't recommend anyone eats the chippings, and its possible that some of the chippings may be sharp. They will, though, use up available nitrogen from the soil in their decomposition process, and this will leave any plants in the vicinity (including your conifers) short of nitrogen for this season. That, though, may not be much of an issue for what sounds like Leylandii...
