something is eating my hollyhock leaves. there are tiny teethmarks on them and the leaves are eaten down to the stalks. there is no slime trail and neither can i find any trace of anything to help me identify the culprit. any ideas.

There are no rabbits around as far as i am aware. i did suspect it may be caterpillars. any ideas how to trace them. i'm conscious of the fact that they become butterflies and would not dream of harming them. my hollyhocks are in tubs so they can be moved if that is going to do any good.

Not all turn to butterflies, a lot of them will be moths, and they're usually much less fussy about what they eat and cause significant damage. Sneak out at night with a torch and check what's going on!

thank you. i'll do that and see what's going on.

Sounds like caterpillar damage, though there must be a lot if the leaves are eaten down to the stalks. Is it just the lower leaves and do you have rabbits about?
