Can you let me know what this plant is please?

It is a fritillaria probably a yellow 'Crown Imperial'

Agree. It is rather small and undernourished looking so would benefit from being replanted (after it has died down) in some humus rich soil in part shade.

Thank you both so much. This is my first spring in this home so first time I have ever seen such a pretty plant. I will move it into rich soil as soon as it has died down as you suggest. Will now be able to tell my friends what it is. Again thanks.

they also have a foxy smell which isn't particularly pleasant but they are a lovely bulb. They are also susceptible to lily beetle attack.
