Is there anything that can be planted successfully underneath a large conifer?

Welcome, Ilona!
If you can thin out and raise the canopy, there are a few things to try: Creeping Holly-Grape (Mahonia repens); Columbine (Aquilegia formosa & hybrids); many ferns; Snowflake (Leucojum species); Aspen Daisy (Erigeron speciosa); Carpet Bugle (Ajuga reptans); Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis); Pigsqueak (Bergenia species); Brunnera macrophylla; Coral Bells (Heuchera sanguinea); Hardy Geraniums; False Solomon's Seal (Smilacina racemosa).
It is going to be poor, dry soil, so apply a good organic fertilizer, such as fish meal, mulch everything with good compost, and be ready to water the first few months, and in drought thereafter.

Next question
I don't think I'd try, no, because the soil is so impoverished.
Any plans to get rid of the conifer?!
