Combination of attacks - upturned grapefruit/orange skins to attract them away from the hostas then go out at dusk and pick them off the plants and skins and throw them in to a bucket of salt water. Beer traps are another possibility if you can't think of better things to do with beer.
Use slug pellets as an absolute last resort, hide pellets under stones or grapefruit shells to stop pets/children from finding them.

Have you tried Slug Clear.....you water it on and around the plants. A bed and breakfast owner had a lot of comments on the perfect state of his hostas and he revealed, in a magazine, that he used Slug Clear every 2 weeks. He had pets. However please check online about safety for pets....it will tell you.
