Hi GOY community.
My question is this...I live in the Reading area(mostly clay soil). What will grow in the ground and give me a nice display of colour in the summer? I'm thinking of shrubs that require not a lot of aftercare?

Full sun, shade of part shade? How much space are you wanting to fill? Have you got height limits?

RM - I live in Bracknell, only 12 miles from you, and half my garden is on clay.
My garden will be open for charity on 7th and 8th June 2-5pm. There will also be plants for sale. Why not drop in and get some ideas?

Good idea. Meanwhile have a look at shrubs Pieris Forest Flame, Spireas, euonymus fortunii varieties, azaleas if your clay is acid. For a sunny spot try shrubby potentillas but don't put the red flowered one in full sun.

For the front of the border have some perennials - try some perennial geraniums - they need almost no care at all - and perhaps some winter heathers. In autumn you could plant some easy reliable bulbs like daffodils and crocus. If you have any areas with shade most of the day try omphaloides and epimedium x rubrum which has beautiful red and green leaves in spring. Andrew will have lots more suggestions.

I wish I lived near Bracknell; would love to see Andrewr's planting on clay. He is so knowledgeable and kind.
