Philadelphus with no fragrance :(

I planted a philadelphus a couple of years ago, it was bare root and this is the first year that it has blossomed, so imagine my surprise when I realised yesterday that there is absolutely no fragrance to it. Zero, nada, rien. What could be the possible reason for this? It's all a bit disappointing as the reported fragrance was the only reason for planting.

Thanks.

Tell me about it - I've had one or two over the years with absolutely no fragrance, and I've no idea why - the variety was supposed to be fragrant in both cases, but just wasn't. I'm afraid I simply heaved them out ...

Thanks for the information, I may see if I can buy one in bloom sometime instead.
