I have just bought two white hydrangeas and put them in tubs on my kitchen terrace which gets sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. I live in Spain so the temperature is not in the summer. I have just watered them lightly this morning all over and they look like they have wilted! Was this right or should I only water them from the roots or is there another problem?

If you watered the foliage when the sun was on it this could be the cause of the wilting. Best to just water the tub not the actual leaves.

Water when they're not in sunshine, and as MG says, water the roots - that is put your can under the foliage just above the compost and give them a good soak. Any excess will run out, assuming (and hoping) you have drainage holes in the pots.

I find even in our summers that hydrangea are very thirsty plants.
are your pots big enough do you think?
and maybe standing them on a saucer would help, just a thought, plastic or glazed clay pots are better than terracotta, they hold the moisture longer,

Sorry Pamg standing on a saucer is counterproductive as the excess water needs to run out of the container or the soil will be come waterlogged.

Not quite sure what you mean by "Water them from the roots" if you have just planted them you need to water them well, they don't really like too much sun they like shade and cool conditions. Also depending on the size of your pots, you will have to re-pot into bigger pots when you see roots coming from the hole at the bottom of the pots. They should be planted in the ground ideally.
