I have just received 264 'garden ready' impatiens for a commercial customer. i am not due to plant up for a few weeks, and as garden ready plants was expecting them to arrive in bigger pots. They are in plug trays of 24. Will they be ok left in the trays and hardened off in the usual way without potting on??

Hi, that sounds about right, if it's t&m, Derek.

thanks for the response
these are from gardening direct. They say they can be planted out, but could also be potted on, however I would like to avoid if possible, considering the number (I have about the same amount of geraniums coming as well)
The tray cubes are about 2 in x 1in and the plants are 3in high and look strong in good condition

Hi, I wouldn't put them out until the end of this month, but what you could try is giving them a weak feed, to try and get the growth they want to put on, but on't have the soil for, there won' be many nutrients left in containers that size, but this might just keep them going until the end of the month, Derek.

I've given up with mail order plugs after so much disappointment, from wrong colours to damaged plants, some sent in march when the delivery date was late april, I had an awful job stopping them getting cold, they even arrived after being sent in frosty weather, spending the weekend in a sorting office!

I think they've got a cheek selling Impatiens walleriana at all, given the problem with Impatiens Downy Mildew. I know what they grow and sell is guaranteed free of the infection, but its in the environment here, so once they're planted, they are very much at risk.

No, not if the plugs are the small ones, which it sounds as if they are, a 'few weeks' is way too long. One week, maybe... I'm just wondering in what sense these plants are garden ready... seems they're not hardened off and they're not big enough to plant out.
