Hi, welcome to GoY, the sun wouldn't bother the leaves at all i you planted it in the ground, unortunately the frost in winter would, they're not completely hardy, although garden centres would have you believe they are, they would need a lot of winter protection, with straw and hessian, and then you have no guarantee that it would survive if we got a very cold winter, best to just keep potting them on or as long as you can, and bring inside or the winter, preferably into a frost free greenhouse, Derek.
ps, sorry about the missing letters, having trouble with the letters F and D.

Hi Sharon, yes if you plant them in the ground, make sure that you have very good drainage, and a shelterd spot out of the wind, and round about october fold all the leaves up to the top of the plant as much as possible, and stuff straw into the middle to protect the crown, and tie them up, then wrap in hessian sacking, then put about 8 or 9 inches of straw over the soil, for about as far as the leaves were spread, to protect the roots from cold and wet, then hope for the best, Derek.

Hi Myron, yes I know, I'm having trouble with D and F, I have to press them very hard, and don't always notice until I've finished, then I don't want to start again, especially if it's a long reply, lol, Derek.
Hi Sharon, if you intend to plant them outside, you may as well do it now, unless they're very small, in which case , I would leave them in pots until they get a bit bigger, Derek.

Hi can anyone help please if lots weeds all In between my nice plants when I pull them up to stop them back can I put that wood chip stuff around the plants and will it stop the weeds back ...thank you...

Hi Sharon, I presume you mean 3ft with the leaves pointing upwards, and not 3ft of trunk, which would make it quite a large plant, so I would keep it potted for a couple of years at least, you could always give the appearance of it being planted in the ground by burying the pot,and just lift it out for winter.
The weed question, I woul't put woodchip on your flowerbeds because they take a lot of nitrogen from the ground as they rot down, it would be better to use garden compost as a mulch, which would keep the weeds down for a while, you woul have to weed the beds first though, not just bury them, Derek.
Hi Bloomer, no it isn't crumbs, I was using a soft brush to clean the keyboard, and accidentally knocke the tops off those 2 letters, Derek.
