I have three tree ferns, over the winter I covered them with straw, none have any new growth, they are all black. The main one was very slimy so I tried cutting a couple of inches off but it is still slimy. Do you think they are dead, or is there a possibility that they may grow next year, or do you think I should cut them a bit shorter?
Thanking you for your assistance in this matter
Regards
Brian

Looks like a wasp in the centre of the tree in the bottom pic. I think they're goners, particularly the one you've sawn the top off, which I doubt very much will ever recover - the other two might, if you're prepared to wait and keep them moist - try pouring some sugar water into the top.
