What plants will grow under leylandii? The only plant we have in that part of the garden is a single bluebell!

Geranium Macrorrizhum is a great plant for dry shade and forms a nice carpet very quickly, I have both a white and a pink form, lovely coloured autumn foliage too :-)

A good trick for soils like this is to put some water retaining gel crystals in the planting hole and mix a little with the backfill soil. It extends the range of what you can grow. Try this with the geranium Simbad suggests - and there are others that will survive there with this treatment, as long as you choose tough ones.
Euphorbia amygdaloides Purpurea will survive there - it is a spreader but if you want to fill the space its ideal - it has red leaves and has lime green flowers in spring that last for ages. (Avoid getting the white sap on your skin)
If you want a shrub try Mahonia aquifolium.
Epimediums might be worth a try with the gel crystals - there are several varieties that have yellow flowers in spring but their nicest feature is beautiful bronzey and green leaves that mature to green. I can't recall which variety the one I 'm thinking of is, but it spreads well too.Check though as they don't all get the pretty leaves.
Good mulching with compost will help in the longer term.

Another choice would be Vinca, the dwarf form would look nice or maybe the variegated one, looks great lovely mauve flowers in spring, but can be invasive if allowed to.

probably numerous plants but remember that conifers drain the surrounding soil of all moisture so whatever you plant will need constant watering.
