I only opened an account in order to "spy" on family members. I never write or show anything there, because I hate it.

My daughters visited me and decided that I needed to be on Facebook. They used my computer to set up an account for me telling me, it's the in thing and I need to be on it. I then got loads of emails telling me that he, she, somebody, has linked me or wants to be my friend.
The upshot is that I now have hundreds of people linked to me, most of them I've never heard of because they are friends of cousins or people that now my daughters.
When my eldest daughter last visited me, I mentioned this and she said, Oh dad, you know that you can hide your profile from people that you haven't added to your list? Of course I didn't, why would I? She sorted this for me and it's a lot better.
I also heard that if you apply for a job, the first thing that future employers do is to search you on Facebook. I sincerely hope that if I decide on a career change they don't find my Facebook account. :o(

I have an account but don't write anything - just look occasionally at links I get emails about.

I am on Facebook, and occasionally post some photos of plants in my garden on there.

I joined it once, but it got on my nerves ... so I deleted the account after a few days. I can't be bothered with things like that ...

Hallo all. Thanks for all the answers....pro and contra. I think the main problem that people have with FB is that they think that they will reveal too much about themselves, but all you have to do here is click somebodys profile and most of them will tell you a lot about where they live, their hobby´s etc etc, so in end effect there is not much difference in my opion. I enjoy FB and look a couple of times a day to see what family and friends are doing....btw I´m not there under my log-in name here. Have a nice day in the garden and enjoy the good weather while it lasts. I just hope that this doesn´t get into a heated discussion, it wasn´t intended to be so.

Hi, no I'm not on fb, but my grandaughter is, and I've seen some of the things that get posted on there, it seems to me that there is a sort of compulsion, to tell the world everything that you do, even the act of breaking wind, seems to be a signal to let everyone know, I think they must lead very sad, uninteresting lives, also you hear a lot about people getting bullied on fb, the solution, don't go on facebook, simples, Derek.

I don't think you need worry Rogi - so far, I'm smiling like mad, I'm glad its not just me that gets driven mad by the thing. I'm also amused by Nanniji saying 'no idea what to do', made me laugh. Clearly the 'social media revolution' isn't summat we particularly want to be involved with... I thought about joining Twitter, but I'm not sure I can be bothered with that either - I think I'd rather be potting up plants, generally gardening or researching new plants/diseases on the internet instead... maybe I'm becoming a hermit!
Derekm: I know what you're saying, but I'd guess, if you're young and you're not part of this 'social scene', life must be quite difficult - its how they all operate these days, and it does have good points. It's the way the world is moving on, though obviously, through my own choice, its moving on without me;-)))

I'm on FB too, I like to put pics of how my garden is doing so friends and family can see what i've been up to. Also I've just redecorated and retiled my bathroom so I had to show that off didn't I ? haha

I actually joined facebook because my kids are in contact with distant cousins in Switzerland, France, America and Australia. They tell me all what is going on with these relatives who they have not met, which I think is quite nice. I am not sure what the relationship is, they share a common great-grandma. Maybe some one knows (cousin twice removed perhaps) Any thoughts

I think they will be third cousins.

Ah Facebook, or alternatively named Faceache - I am, but not much use to you because it drives me completely bonkers, so I never use it, or at least, as far as is possible, cos if I have to read yet another schmaltzy rhyme about friendship or whatever, or look at someone else's bigoted, ignorant rant again, I'm going to slit my throat;-))). I find it deeply depressing that it might be a true reflection of the human race, so I avoid it wherever possible... I'm not there as Bamboo either... and if it weren't for the Scrabble, I'd not be on there at all!
I did belong to a group about gardening on Facebook though, but that seems to have faded away...
