My maple Acer is looking very sad ,tiny leaves and one side the buds have fallen off.I have bought another one but it is in a shallow pot .The plant is about a foot in height and is really healthy!my question is will it be OK to plant in a larger container or will I ruin it.

No,you can pot it up into a larger container, but don't use one that's much, much bigger than the root ball, just one that's a couple of inches bigger all round at most.
