Hi Sharon, if you've just bought it I presume it's in a pot, plants grown in pots can be planted at any time, provided the groun isn't waterlogged or frozen, so yes you can plant it now, Derek.

Hi Derek if sent away for it it will be delivered as bare roots I have to soak the roots first don't I ...for how long please ...will it flower this year ?...thank you Derek

Hi Sharon, it's a bit late in the season for bare root, it should be delivered potted, on the of chance that it is, put it in a bucket of water, to just cover the roots, as soon as it's delivered, and get it in the ground as quickly as you can, I would try not to keep it in water any more than about 12 hours maximum, it should flower this year, Derek.

Hi Sharon, I would mix some garden compost and a handful of blood fish and bone, or growmore, with the soil you take out, and back fill with this, Derek.

Just keep an eye on it and don't let it get dried out, look after it and it'll be fine, what are you growing it up, have you a wall or framework

I don't know why any plant retailer would send you a bare rooted rose at this time of year. It will possibly be dead on arrival, and even if it isn't it will struggle to survive. Bare rooted roses should be normally dispatched and planted when the rose is fully dormant, ie in winter, never when it's supposed to be in full growth.

Oh dear why they sell this to me if it dead I will try send back I hope it not . bendipa...I am going to try grow it up a wooden fence do I need some support for it please pamg...thank you

What exactly is a mulch I should no really but could you tell me please ...?

If you are growing it up a solid wooden fence you it's best to put a trellis up. You can use a cheap plastic mesh that comes on a roll, which you cut according to the area you want to cover. If you have one of those mesh or lattice type fences you just tie the stems in directly. But you don't have to worry about support for a climbing rose until the second year when the stems are long enough.

By the way, Pauls Scarlet rose only blooms once in the year around June. It's not a repeat flowerer unlike with other climbers.

Hi Sharon you need a framework to tie it in to, wires, trellis or plastic you really need to look in a rose book or on the internet, they will show pictures.
you train climbers horizontally along the fence, both ways is fine if the bush is in the middle, if you allow it to go straight up all you get is a few flowers at the top of a spindly branch, tying them in horizontally ecourages the side shoots to come up all the way along the branch, these are the flowering shoots.

You prune back these side shoots after flowering.

I would suggest something like the Hessayon rose book or visit the library for pictures and info re feeding, pruning pests and diseases etc.
bye the way my Pauls scarlet is in flower now, very early this year....

Sharon, a mulch is a layer of something moisture retentive such a compost, well rotted lawn mowings, well rotted manure etc that you spread around your plant both to retain moisture in the ground and hopefully ad some nutrients too.

It would be nice to know who sold you bare root in May.
You should have no hesitation at all in complaining if it doesn't grow - and you shouldn't have to send it back and pay postage - just write. Send a photo if need be, with the order details and date received.
