Hi can an escallonia be grown in a large container on a balcony

It can for a few seasons. Once the roots become tightly packed, they tend to become bare and "scraggy" looking even if you liquid feed regularly. Either replace or cut hard back in spring to get maybe another year or two out of it.

And choose a smaller variety such as 'Slieve Donard' or 'Red Elf' - neither of these gets much more than six feet, but a lot of the others are 10 footers.
