Depends on how long you want nothing to grow for, Roundup as said to kill every green plant or Sodium chlorate (while still on sale) to stop anything growing for 6 months or more.

Just remember though that if your property borders another garden with plants that sodium chlorate can creep sideways and you may get into serious bother if next doors plants start dying off!
