Hello all, i have a mixed hedge, of Holly, Iv, Elm Tree suckers etc, part of which has been damaged by fire. The part that is damaged is Holly, the main stem of this part is about 6 inches thick. My question is how can i see if this will grow again? Do I cut it all back? Any suggestions welcome.

When we accidentally burned some blackberry briars they didn't recover but holly is different. If it was ours I think we'd give it the rest of the season and see if the dormant buds were damaged.-try scratching the bark to see if its green underneath. If it isn't, cutting back or replacing will be your only option. There may be viable branches lower down even if the top is dead so test the bark in more than one place. Don't hold your breath though, you might need to replant in the autumn.
