What's the latest advice for dead heading roses? I think I heard/read somewhere that it is now considered better to just nip off the finished heads rather than cut the stem back. What do you do?

I agree with what bloomer says for the 'cluster' flowered ones - for those that produce flowers on a single stem (HTs usually), cut back to the nearest outward facing bud lower down the stem. The only exception to this is ramblers, which only flower once a year and get pruned in September - doesn't really matter how you deadhead those, but its never a good idea to nip off beneath the flower - you just end up with all sorts of odd looking growth later on.

Thank you for your replies Bloomer and Bamboo, I'll carry on dead heading my roses as you advise.

I didn't know the correct procedure for the other types of Roses,Jaykaty,so I'm glad you now have the information to be able to prune the ones Bamboo mentioned,if you have some of the above....good luck..

All mine are Floribundas,Jaykaty,so I take off the ones that are finished. When they have all finished flowering on that stem,I prune them back to a new outward facing bud..
