how to get rid of black vine weevil

Answers

Weezil sounds fun but its weevil. This was the first question I asked on GOY and was advised to use nematodes watered in around the plant but they are quite expensive if the plant/shrub or hedge is large.

if they are really black they are not vine weevil as they are a dull brown with the odd cream fleck on their backs. Black beetles tend to be good guys eating allsorts of nasties. Have you a photo you could put on?

There is no doubt the weevils I asked my first ever question about were black and had chewed the edges of practically all the hedges on my daughter's estate in Towcester. We walked around (and its a vast place) and every hedge was decimated. At night they covered the paths and ground under the hedges and were almost a plague. The weevils by then had started on more shrubs and were coming into the house much to the cat's delight! The local council were totally disinterested. My daughter has now moved.

Good point Seaburngirl - Vine Weevil is distinct. Only the brown speckled Vine Weevils are a problem, more accurately their grubs. I have lost several potted plants to the damn things. Provado Vine Weevil insecticide does help - but only in pots, do not put in borders.

Squishing adults when you spot them can dent the population. They like to sit in the sun during the day and tend to be found on plants at dusk or on warm walls.

They do have favourite plants - Heuchera and Strawberry come to mind. They grubs like the roots of Fatsia, Begonia tubers and the like.
