No preference for colour but must be nice scented.

I have just bought Princess Anne from David Austin it has a really strong old fashioned perfume. It is mauve/purple with a really good shape. David Austin has a very good and informative web site for choosing a rose.

Browsing t'web came across... http://www.amateurgardening.com/how-to/top-10-roses-for-scent/
I know a lot of people seem to like David Austin's English roses but I think I'd go with the old damask or Alba roses that have stood the test of time - good scent and tough as old boots!

The trouble with growing roses in pots is that they naturally make big roots, so they are soon going to get pot bound and use up what food is available.
The only roses I'd consider growing in pots are the patio ones

Any preference for colour?
Cuisse de nymphe (sometimes listed as Maiden's Blush) is a lovely pale pink (medium height 5 ft)
Frederick Ashton is creamy white (shrub rose grows upto about 3ft high)
Goldbusch is golden yellow (may be a bit on the tall side eventually but it is a lovely rose)
There are loads of darker pink as well.
