recently moved house and in the garden is a fairly mature acer where half of it has rotted and fallen off and the other half looks mostly dead with about 25% in leaf. There is some kind of fungus also on the remaining branches.
Is it best to give it a heavy prune at back end and see what happens next year, or cut it down for firewood?
Should I try a heavy prune in sept/oct or cut it down

I would agree, cut it down, fungus isn't good.

Previous question
Personally I would cut it down now, especially if there is fungus on the branches.
