I planted a hedge of Escallonia (Pink) about four years ago, which is now well established. It is currently (June 17) in full flower, and there are many shoots at the top of the hedge which are standing proud of the rest, and which are not producing blossoms. When is the correct time to prune this hedge back, and will it be damaging to trim these taller shoots now?

when you use Escallonia for hedging, you have a choice to make - if you want lots of flowers, you really have to keep it as an informal hedge, and prune back when the main flowering is over. If you want it as a formal hedge, then a good cutback in spring as growth begins, and trimming whenever necessary thereafter during the growing season, but not in autumn or winter.
