I have just received young Amelanchier Ballerina which is about 1m high and quite gangly. It looks like it should have the side and top shoots pruned back to encourage a more bushy habit. should I do this at all and if so when?

Amelanchier ballerina is, as Teadrinker says, meant for smaller gardens. When you buy one, you either choose a multi stemmed version, or a single stemmed, and it seems you might have picked the second type. Plant it out in Autumn, or now if you think you can keep it well watered, wait till next spring and after it flowers, if it still needs it, prune it back then - this should encourage further branching lower down.

This one is supposed to be narrow and upright, ideal for smaller spaces.
You won't get a bushier shape by pruning, it'll all just go horribly wrong.
