Onions seeds or sets?

For the past 2 seasons I've been growing onions from sets and I've been very disappointed with the results.
Very small onions which don't seem so much bigger than the sets were, although I don't know the variety.
Maybe next year I'll give seeds a try instead, can you suggest a good variety please?

Where we live, in the north of Scotland, the growing season is generally too short to produce a crop from seed and so we grow from sets. Every year a few are on the small side but the large proportion grow on to be good sized onions and keep us in onions until February or March. Sets for me every time.

I do quite well from sets every year , but have had no success with seeds despite several attempts. I shan't try again.

How do I say thanks?
