My laburnum tree looks dead as it has no leaves or flowers, is loose in the ground and can be swayed from side to side. I have tried the scratch and the trunk and some of the branches are still green. Do you think it is dead or might it recover?

It may not yet be entirely dead, but the fact it can be moved about in the soil beneath means the best thing to do is remove it before it gets blown down. Possibly something's happened at the roots, which is why its now moving about, and why there's no growth.

thank you for these replies which confirms what I was thinking and will now need to remove it before it falls.

From your description, particularly the fact it is loose in the soil, I'd say it was dead.
