You don't need a greenhouse to grow carrots just sow the seed thinly where you want them to grow. If you have a problem with carrot root fly you will need to cover wit fleece to protect them.

All this talk of carrots has got me thinking again. I'm. Determined to grow some but with clay soil i always produce them like short pencils.
You tell me I need sandy soil ? Can I buy sand and create a sandy bed ? Details please.

Never tried a short root variety. Do they have a chance in a clayey soil ! Or should I add sand first ? I'm fed up with failing but we really like carrots. Even my latest batch of "pencil" carrots tasted very good.

I'm on clay soil as well Hank, I now grow in tall tubs and do a lot better than 40yrs of trying in the garden.......Might be worth a try....
