Ihave a new 3 ft tall lilac tree in a 12"pot. Should I transpose it into a bigger pot, now or when?

Ihave a new 3 ft tall lilac tree in a 12"pot. Should I transpose it into a bigger pot, now or when?

Turn it out of its pot, see if its rootbound - if so pot on into something larger, if not, wait till next spring, or check it again in autumn. I'm assuming it's a small variety of lilac if you want to keep it in a pot, not the usual tree like form, Syringia vulgaris, which wouldn't do well for long in a pot.
