How do I grow an avocado plant from the pip?

Answers

Take the avocado seed -sorry-pip out of the fruit. Dry it off a bit with a paper towel so it's not so slippery. Two thirds of the way up the pip towards its tip stick four round toothpicks opposite each other. Place the pip on toothpicks on a glass of water, you see the toothpicks keep it from falling into the glass. Now fill the glass of water is the water covers the bottom half of the pip. Place this setup any place you choose. Maintain the water level during the time that it takes to sprout which will be about four weeks. Once it sprouts, pot the pip in moist well draining soil so the the tip of the pip...(lol)....is just above the surface. Place in a sunny warm location and fertilize with a pinch of fertilizer in water every two weeks. As the avocado grows place into bigger pots. Wait until next spring to move it outdoors if you wish. OK, now that I have gotten use to saying pip instead of seed. Next, I will work on getting used to spelling color, colour.

The best way I have found is to suspend the stone over water so that the bottom (round end) is in the water. You can do this by sticking some cocktail sticks in the sides of the stone and then balancing it over a bowl. Change the water every few days and wait for the roots to grow sufficiently before you pot it up. You can get diagrams of this from Google or there are some videos on you tube. Make sure the stone is cleaned properly before you start.

Loosestrife we were typing at the same time, I can't get used to pip either!

I haven't done this since grammerschool nature class. I think that I will try it again. I think that my greatest botanic feat was growing a well differentiated carrot plant from some carrot root cells. But this is more fun.

Nothing wrong with saying seed. Pips is more usually used for the seeds of apples, oranges, grapes etc. Isn't it a minefield - I don't know how people ever learn English!

Yes, you're right Steragram, I too think that English is a very difficult language to learn.

Yes you can but don't hold your breath waiting for it to produce fruit.

I grew a lovely avocado plant like this. It was fine during the winter while the heating was on, but once the heating went off, it really struggled, so make sure you put it in a warm spot during Spring/Summer. Good luck!
