Do all maples and sycamores require some shelter protection from other trees, buildings etc, even though they still prefer direct sunlight. Ta.

Agree with MG, its only Acer palmatum varieties which need shelter.

No it is just the Japanese acers and they require protection from wind more than they do from sun. Sun is only a problem if you get late frosts and the frosted leaves get sun on them, they will then shrivel up and die off, happened to one of ours this year for the first time when we had a frost in early May.
