we have always grown peas but for some reason this year we have found them taken from the grow area and left around the garden. Do you know whether it is birds doing this and if so what birds would it be. They are not eating them just leaving them.

That does sound like birds. Did you sow them in situ or transplant seedlings? The birds might be looking for worms in newly disturbed soil.
