My son had some lovely what looked like white bluebells flower in his garden in the spring now they have died off each flower head has tiny small round black seed inside. I have collected these as I liked the plant, van theybe planted and if so when is the best time
the bulb looks like a small new potato

No they didnt smell and were very pretty they grew to about 10 inches and he lived there for 18 months and they didnt spread hardly at all in this time

There is a nice picture or ornithogalum on Google you can check with if you can remember just what they were like. Otherwise take a photo next spring and post it again.

sow them now and they will probably take up 3-4 yrs to flower. general purpose compost and then leave the pot outside to cope with all the weather that the seed would experience anyway.
as to what they are they could be white bluebells or muscari or ornithogalum as already suggested but with out a photo its difficult to say.

They didn't smell oniony did they, if you bruised the foliage? And about 6 inches high? If they did, I suggest you don't plant it - it's an allium and it spreads like wildfire, difficult to control.
