No idea, never heard of it, probably like draping banana skins on rose bushes, another strange practice.

maybe they're peppercorns :o)

Sulphur, yes, but not sure why that would be good for peppers - still, what do I know, veggies aren't my thing...

Could it be the phosphorus in the match heads that acts as a feed!?

i think Nicky08 has the answer that was told to me. Whatever they are made of, poss. phosphorus, was told to me is some sort of nutient that helps the pepper plant grow like aferterlizer or feed. I just wondered if anyone else had ever heard of it. I've tried it on a few plants & so far it doesnt seem to have harmed the plant but we'll see when they start producing. thank u all.

modern matches dont have phosphorous in the same form as the old fashioned ones. Here they are safety matches so the phosphorous doesnt catch fire in the box, so they do not leachthe chemicals into the soil. Not sure what compound they use in the USA.

Got to be a lot easier and certainly more attractive from an aesthetic point of view to feed your tomatoes with tomato food, I'd have thought.
