To ripen properly tomatoes need to be in full sun.

Thank you for your replies...the reason I was thinking that they may be ok in semi shade was because I have grown them in the greenhouse before and have always shaded the glass in summer.

Tomatoes do not need to be in full sun to ripen. Warmth is what they need.

Thanks for your reply... they may not get the warmth they need then in a shaded place... the spot I have that gets full sun gets really hot and is against a south facing wall,,,, maybe I cud shade them a bit with some green netting if it gets really hot.

The optimum temperature for ripening tomatoes is 70 to 75F. When temperatures exceed 85 to 90 F, the ripening process slows significantly or even stops.
They will ripen below 70, but not as quick. Hence, why they are best grown in a greenhouse with shading and a bit of cooling air.

Thanks again for your reply... will try them see what happens. I got them given the other day.. they are about 2 1/2 foot tall with some flowers on and side shoots taken out.

I *think* they'd prefer sun - but of course you'll need to water them copiously!
