Could you tell us what an 'Irish Salvia' is, please? A Latin name or a photo would help us to advise you.

I believe the plant is called red or scarlet salvia. I tried organic treatment of soap and oil in water to spray the plants but they are not doing well. I am about to try a pesticide. Some blooms have faded almost to white and it appears that something may be eating them. Do you use biatomaceus earth?

I'm sorry, but I haven't heard of 'biatomaceus earth' - it may be an American name for something we use in the UK.

I think your Salvias are Salvia splendens, and the advice I found is to dead-head them, and feed them with tomato food (weekly) to get them flowering again. They're annuals over here.

I may have misspelled diatomaceus earth. It is added to soil to stop slugs, snales, etc. The scarlet salvia is an annual here in Des Moines, Iowa. Do you use any pesticides in your perenial garden? I do not want to harm the rabbits that visit my garden. Still trying to save my salvia.

I don't, unless I *really* have to. I spray my roses against blackspot, and that's about all...oh, and dowse containers with vine weevil killer, as that is a real pest and eats the roots of Heucheras.

Good luck with your Salvias!

How do I say thanks?
