there is no easy way , would u consider making 2 seperate levels , you could use old railway sleepers, my son had same problem , he made his garden with 3 different levels, which looks great.

Hi Ann
Unfortunately digging is hard work, even in light soils. Depending on the area to be dug and the access you might consider hiring a micro-digger.
The biggest problem is what are you going to do with the removed soil - you either have to get rid of it off-site or spread it around which means that somewhere you will have a step or at least a new higher level at the end of the garden which may need some sort of retainer wall.
Eamonn's suggestion for a terrace built behind railway sleeps is good - if you can locate affordable sleepers (don't forget that it's a two person job to shift them).
Another option is to make the terrace by making a steeper bank out of the moved soil and planting up the bank as a rockery.

An idea of the size of your garden would help plus info such as direction and soil type (even if you can only say whether it's light/crumbly/heavy/solid).

Check out the sloping garden ideas by clicking on the letter S at the bottom of the page. Plan what you want before you start digging. Take lots of photos - probably over several months to see the garden in different seasons and draw on them (great these days with home computers and printers)

Could you add several shots of the area so we are clear what it is you want to achieve?
