How can I get this screw out?

Screwdriver first (try WD as Steragram has said), if it is not budging then I would hammer it in as pliers may also break the wood.

OH says that's why he said a mole wrench which gives a better grip. If you have a vise grab the screw in that and turn the wood round if there's room. Take your pick but let us know how you got on!

Use a junior hacksaw to carve a straight slot in the head of the screw?

Saw half an inch of the wooden post off!

is today the 1st of april. ?

I'd go with the WD40 first and if still no joy, hacksaw as close to the wood as possible and then hammer in the remains so that it isn't sticking out (even better if you have a nail punch and can hammer the remains well into the wood.

Give me strength. It doesn't look like it's a very expensive bit of timber.
Either cut it flush with the wood and be done with it, or get a new piece of wood to replace what looks like a crappy bit of wood that needs replacing anyway. For Gods sake!

Now now Myron, the wood and chicken wire may be of immense sentimental value :)

Yes I have some very sentimental bits of wood and chicken wire - I am saving them to pass down to my family!!! :) - And as for old rusty screws!

So Karina, what did you do in the end and did it work?
Myron its not crappy - years of wear left in it! What happened to "make do and mend" - those my age will remember it.

Well there is the first option of cutting the screw flush with the wood. Another option would be to just saw off the bit of wood with the screw in.
I'm all for using things that still have life in, but there comes a time when the time and effort needed out-ways the potential saving.
Replace the bloody bit of wood for another bit and use the old piece for something else like stirring paint.

I wish you would tell OH that and then i might be able to get into the garage!

Now that begs the question Steragram - have you got the same piece of wood blocking the garage door - do you need a piece of wood like that or do you need to stir a can of paint? :)

I just need to get into the garage...too much stuff saved "just in case we need it" to be able to get past it all. We have pieces of wood in many shapes and sizes, cardboard boxes, packaging materials, old paint tins, many tools, mower, shredder, workbench, portable work bench, freezer, old potting bench that won't fit in the shed, sack truck...all we need are some tranquillisers for me and a skip. Oh and there's a tin trunk of kindling and an old storage unit with dry logs in case of bad weather when you don't want to get wet going to the wood store. And its only an ordinary garage meant for one car. Sorry, rant over!

Oh heavens - what is it with men? My husband has his man cave and I get the outside lav as my shed which is damp and full of spiders.

Doesn't everyone have an outside lav?... Reminds me when I was young, we moved into a house that had an inside lave instead of a cold outside one. My mother decided to have a house warming party, the weather was nice so we had a barbeque. I over heard my auntie saying to my mother, "Eh our Edna, you've come up in the world, it's not that long ago that you were p***ing outside and cooking inside, now look at you".

I'm thinking of giving mine a make-over.

Myron that's really funny! thanks for the chuckle.
Cammomile - Hope you don't have to do your potting in there? Will OH let you have your barrow in his man cave?
8 Aug, 2014
I wouldn't dare ask! I do any potting in the garden. He insists its a coal hole not an outside lav!

I asked my husband who is better at this sort of thing.
Try some penetrating oil or WD round the base and then try a mole wrench round the shaft of the screw. Best of British! Find a fella with a strong grip to do it for you if you can't shift it.
As a last resort cut the screw flush with the wood with a hacksaw (doesn't look to be much screw in the wood) then drill it out.
