the dreaded bind weed

We have loads of bind weed in the back garden. I know it is very difficult to eradicate and that the smallest bit left will sprout. I do get alot of satisfaction from actually working and carefully getting out the spaghetti roots...but I feel nature is getting the better of me!!! I am aware also that continuous application of weed killer will eventually work.what do you guys use? I read the other day that tree stump killer (or the like) may be better but I am unsure.

At one of the famous gardens down here - Hestercombe - they had beds riddled with bindweed, and they have cleared all the plants out, potted up, and placed black plastic over the whole bed. They've been smothering the dreaded stuff. It seems to have worked - I'm sure they dug it over first when the plants came out.
Now I do not believe that there 'is' a quick fix, Annie. If a garden like Hestercombe is dealing with it like this, they'd have tried everything else, wouldn't they, before they went 'drastic'.
Sorry - I know you wanted a magic wand......:-((((

I FOUND OUT THAT LETTING IT CLIMB UP AN OLD BROOM HANDLE TILL IT GETS THICK, THEN WIND IT ROUND ITSELF GOING DOWNWARDS, HA HA IT CHOKES ITS SELF INSTEAD OF STRANGLING MY PLANTS, THEN CUT THE ROOTS OUT WITH AN OLD HACKSAW, LOVE IT DONT LET THE FLOWERS COME OR THE SEEDS WILL SOON APPEAR,, GOOD LUCK,,

Have you tried training it up canes? Then you can use a systemic weedkiller on the growing tips which goes into the roots. Be careful - you need to place a plastic bag round the tips, and spray into that so none of your 'precious' plants get it as well!
