This pieris has been here for many years with no problems. Suddenly half of it has gone reddish brown. Leaves haven't fallen off yet but I think they soon will. Until this weekend it's been pretty dry here (Derbyshire ) but it's survived drier years in the past. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

It might have received some kind of stem damage from a storm or another type of trauma. Try tracking the stems on the dying part of the plant to the base and see if you can find a partially split or otherwise damaged stem. I might say that I have had this happen also to a bush and a small cherry tree the culprits in my case we're my grandchildren.
