I have planted in pipes with polystyrene bases with perennials this summer,in lahinch co Clare in a sheltered back yard.i will be leaving at the end of August and returning next April/May .should I cut everything back before leaving or what else can I do to ensure they make it to next year okay

No, don't cut everything back, not necessary, if they're perennials, they'll just die down when the time is right, and cutting them will only force new growth. Your biggest problem is keeping them watered though - they'll continue to need water right up to winter setting in, so they might expire from drought.

Mid October probably, but it is, to some extent, weather dependent - if its freezing by then (unlikely) then they needn't bother.
