Hi, welcome to GoY, you don't say whereabouts you are in the USA, but if your minimum winter temperature falls below 50f you will need to put it somewhere that can be kept at or above this temperature, if you are lucky enough to be above this temp, youcan leave it in the ground, it doesn't need pruning, it only grows to about 3ft high, and that takes between 10 and 20 years, Derek.
