My golden privet hedge is looking rather pale and lack lustre with some area an element of brownish leaves is it the hot summer/lack of rain or suffering from ??????

Privet is not a guaranteed evergreen so I would not worry too much. Give it some bone meal and mulch it if possible and it should green up (gold up) fine next Spring.
