A shady garden!

By Ruthgl

Three years ago I moved into a new house, which faces west but the back garden faces north east, though it does get quite a lot of sun. The back was fenced off, with 6foot panels, but I have attached strong trellis to this hoping to grow climbers. However, the plants I put in, a honeysuckle and two clematis have failed. The ivies are growing well.

Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong and any ideas of plants to put in that will grow, in these circumstances.

Thank you in advance.

Hard to say without more information, so here's a few questions. What did you do with the soil in terms of preparation prior to planting? Second, exactly when did you plant the clematis and honeysuckle? Third, what part of the country are you in (assuming you're even in the UK)? And lastly, did the erection of fence panels mean that the planting area in front was getting shaded?

What kind of soil do you have in that border? Does the fence belong to you or to next door?
